FIFA Announcement that Seattle Will Host Multiple World Cup Games in 2026

Statement from Fred Mendoza, Chair, Public Stadium Authority Board:

“Congratulations to soccer fans all over the state of Washington! FIFA’s decision to name Seattle’s Lumen Field as a host stadium for the 2026 World Cup is a gratifying testament to the hard work of local sports and soccer advocates 25 years ago and to the commitment of First and Goal, Inc., and the Washington State Public Stadium Authority (PSA) to construct a state-of-the-art, world class soccer stadium. With FIFA’s selection of Seattle, Lumen Field will focus on major modernization improvements to prepare it for the world’s game.”

“The PSA and First and Goal, Inc. are indebted to the SEA2026 Bid Committee and the Seattle Sounders FC for demonstrating outstanding leadership to secure this historic achievement.  It presents an exciting opportunity to showcase Seattle and the Pacific Northwest to global visitors and to introduce local fans to the excitement and intensity of World Cup.”

“At the PSA, we are proud that FIFA recognizes that Lumen Field is a world class soccer venue. In 1997, the State legislature specified that the new stadium should be constructed as a world class venue and the voters of Washington approved Referendum 48 on a promise that international world class soccer would be played in the new stadium. There is no higher level of international soccer than the World Cup.  Lumen Field and Lumen Field Event Center have produced tremendous public benefits for our state over the last 25 years. Bringing World Cup to Seattle fulfills the last of the major promises made to Washington State voters during the Referendum campaign. The PSA remains dedicated to overseeing the public’s interest in Lumen Field and will support Seattle, King County, and the State as we prepare for 2026.”

FIFA Announcement that Seattle Will Host Multiple World Cup Games in 2026

Statement from Fred Mendoza, Chair, Public Stadium Authority Board:

“Congratulations Seattle! FIFA’s decision that Seattle’s Lumen Field will host multiple soccer games for the men’s World Cup Tournament in 2026 is a testament to the hard work of local sports and soccer advocates and to the quality of Lumen Field, a state-of-the-art venue that will be improved even further for the games.

“First and Goal, Inc. and the Washington State Public Stadium Authority want to compliment the SEA2026 Bid Committee and the Sounders FC for leading the successful efforts to secure this honor for our region. Hosting these internationally important World Cup games is not only a historic achievement, it presents an exciting opportunity to build the image of Seattle and the Pacific Northwest across the globe.

“At the Public Stadium Authority, we are proud that FIFA recognized that Lumen Field offers a world class venue for fans to come and enjoy the games. In 1997, the State legislature specifically anticipated that the World Cup would one day come to Seattle, and voters that year approved the public/private partnership that funded the construction of Lumen Field, which has produced tremendous public benefits for our state over the last 25 years. Bringing these games to Seattle fulfills the last of the major promises made to Washington State voters during that campaign, and we at the PSA remain dedicated to protecting the public interest and enhancing our communities as we provide oversight over Lumen Field.”
